Gold and copper built the town, and the enormous open cut mine site is still the first thing most visitors ask to see. A short drive that is not always a simple one
On paper, Rockhampton is close. For a confident driver on a clear morning it is well under an hour. That is not the same as saying the trip is nothing. The climb over the range is winding, it carries heavy vehicles, and in wet weather or fading light it asks a lot of a driver who is no longer keen on either. For someone who has given up night driving, or who no longer holds a licence, a city appointment turns into a favour asked of a son, a daughter or a neighbour, and half their day gone with it. Calling ahead does two things. It reserves you a slot on a day that fills, and it tells us how much demand there is in town, which is what decides how often we come back.
A century of mining, and a working life spent around noise
The Mount Morgan mine operated for roughly a hundred years, and the working history of the town took in drilling, crushing, rail, workshops and heavy machinery, above ground and below it. Hearing protection was not standard issue on a work site for most of that era. Plenty of people here spent decades in that environment, and plenty more worked at mines elsewhere in Central Queensland before settling back home.

What the appointment itself involves
Set aside about an hour for a first appointment. Most of it is conversation, and the testing sits inside that rather than replacing it.
- We talk about what you are missing and where, whether that is the phone, the pub or the grandkids.
- We look inside both ears and check the ear canal and eardrum.
- If ear wax is blocking the view, we discuss removing it first, because wax alone can change the numbers.
- You listen to tones at a range of pitches and respond to the faint ones.
- We check how clearly you make out speech, which matters far more day to day than hearing beeps.
- We measure how the eardrum and middle ear are behaving, which shows where the difficulty sits.
- You get your results and your options on the day, not in a letter three weeks later.
Older residents, and the families who help them
Mount Morgan has an older population than the Queensland average, and many appointments are booked by an adult child rather than the person attending. Bring them along. A second person in the room means the explanation lands twice, and the household member who has been repeating themselves at the dinner table often knows most about which conversations are going wrong. Devices, servicing and the small things that stop working
If you already wear hearing devices, a clinic day is a good chance to have them looked over. Tubing hardens, wax filters block, domes perish and settings drift out of step with the ears they were set for. Bring the devices and their charger or spare batteries. Where a device needs more than a clean and an adjustment, we will say plainly what it needs, rather than steering you straight at a new one. Any hearing device we discuss is included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).

A town that keeps its own record
Few Queensland towns hold onto their story the way Mount Morgan does, through the museum, the railway and the sheer scale of the mine void above the rooftops.
