Hearing Self-Check
A few quick questions about everyday listening - plus an optional sound check - to help you decide whether it's worth having your hearing looked at. It's private, takes about two minutes, and nothing is recorded.
Before you start
This is a self-check, not a hearing test
Hearing loss usually comes on so gradually that the people around you notice before you do. This check can flag the early signs, but it can't measure your hearing or diagnose anything - only a hearing assessment with an audiologist can do that. Answer honestly for the most useful result.
Do you have trouble following a conversation when two or more people are talking?
Do you find it hard to hear in noisy places like cafés, clubs or family gatherings?
Do people often seem to mumble, or not speak clearly?
Do you turn the TV or radio up louder than others in the room would like?
Do you often ask people to repeat themselves?
Do you have trouble hearing on the phone?
Do you miss everyday sounds like the doorbell, a phone ringing, or a reversing beeper?
Do you struggle to hear women's or children's voices?
Do you ever avoid catching up with people because hearing is hard work?
Do you notice ringing, buzzing or other noise in your ears (tinnitus)?

Quick sound check: numbers in noise
Real hearing difficulty often shows up first as trouble hearing in background noise. In this short check you'll hear three numbers read out over some noise and type what you catch. It's indicative only - best done with headphones in a quiet room.
Five short rounds, about a minute. Turn your volume to a comfortable level first.
Your browser can't play the spoken numbers for this check. You can still use the questionnaire above, or book an assessment for an accurate result.
Listen, then type the three numbers you heard.
Indicative only. This sound check depends on your device, volume and surroundings, and it isn't calibrated - so it can't measure your hearing or replace a professional test. Use it as a nudge, not a result.
