Hearing FAQs
Is there a way to stop tinnitus?
There is no single cure for tinnitus, but real relief is possible. Management options explained. CQ Audiology, Rockhampton.
There is no single cure for tinnitus, but many people in Australia get real relief. Management options include treating any underlying cause, such as ear wax or hearing loss, sound therapy, hearing aids with built-in tinnitus support, and relaxation strategies. An audiologist can assess your tinnitus and tailor a management plan.
Why there is no universal cure
Tinnitus has several possible contributing factors, and it is generally understood as a symptom of the auditory system rather than a single condition with one fix. This is why management, rather than a guaranteed cure, is the realistic and evidence-based goal for most people.
Tinnitus management options: sound therapy and masking
- Treating an underlying cause, such as clearing ear wax or addressing an ear infection, which can reduce or resolve tinnitus linked to that cause
- Hearing aids with tinnitus features, useful where hearing loss is also present, since amplifying external sound can reduce how noticeable tinnitus feels
- Sound therapy and masking, using gentle background sound to make tinnitus less prominent, particularly at night
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and habituation, which help reduce how much tinnitus bothers you over time
- Relaxation and sleep strategies, since stress and poor sleep can make tinnitus feel more intrusive, even though they are not usually the underlying cause
What does an audiologist do for tinnitus?
An audiologist assesses your hearing and discusses your tinnitus in detail. They check for a treatable cause such as ear wax. Where appropriate, they recommend sound therapy, hearing aids or other tailored strategies. If a medical cause needs investigation, they will refer you to your GP or an ENT specialist.
Are there things you should avoid for tinnitus relief?
Very loud noise exposure can make tinnitus worse over time, so hearing protection in loud environments is worthwhile. There is no need to avoid all background sound; in fact, complete silence can make some people notice tinnitus more, which is part of why sound therapy can help.
How long until sound therapy and habituation help?
This varies widely between individuals. It depends on the cause and the management approach used. Some people notice a difference within weeks of clearing an underlying cause like ear wax. Sound therapy and habituation strategies can take longer to feel their full effect.
