Hearing FAQs

Can ear wax cause tinnitus?

Whether ear wax build-up can trigger or worsen tinnitus, and how safe removal can help. CQ Audiology, Rockhampton.

Yes. A wax build up can create a blocked ear and trigger or worsen tinnitus, along with muffled hearing and a feeling of fullness. In these cases, safe professional wax removal often reduces the ringing. If tinnitus persists after wax is cleared, a hearing assessment is recommended.

Why can an ear wax blockage in the ear canal trigger tinnitus?

When wax builds up enough to partially or fully block the ear canal, it changes how sound reaches the eardrum. This can increase your awareness of internal sounds. The result is sometimes ringing, buzzing or a feeling of fullness. This is one of the more easily treatable causes of tinnitus.

Signs your tinnitus may be from a wax build up

  • Tinnitus that appeared alongside a feeling of fullness or muffled hearing
  • A recent history of using cotton buds, earphones or hearing aids, which can push wax deeper
  • Tinnitus that seems to fluctuate with ear pressure or after swimming or showering

What happens after wax is removed?

Many people notice tinnitus reduce or resolve once the wax is safely cleared, particularly if the wax build-up was the main trigger. If ringing continues after your ears are clear, it suggests another factor may be involved, and a full hearing and tinnitus assessment is the next step.

If you are naturally prone to wax build-up, tinnitus linked to it can return if wax accumulates again. Regular professional checks, particularly if you use hearing aids or earphones, help catch build-up early before it triggers symptoms again.

How is ear wax safely removed with micro-suction?

Professional removal, such as micro-suction, is the safest approach for significant build-up. Read more on our ear wax removal safety page. Avoid cotton buds and ear candles, which can push wax deeper and are not an evidence-based way to manage tinnitus.

Does clearing wax always stop tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?

Not always, but it commonly reduces or resolves tinnitus that was genuinely triggered by the blockage. Because tinnitus can have more than one contributing factor at once, your audiologist will check your hearing after wax removal to see whether any residual ringing needs further assessment.
