Hearing FAQs

How much does a hearing test cost in Australia?

What a hearing test costs in Australia, when it is free, and how Medicare and referrals fit in. Indicative ranges only; contact CQ Audiology, Rockhampton for a personalised quote.

A hearing test in Australia can range from free to around $100 to $250, or more for a comprehensive or specialist assessment, depending on the clinic and the type of assessment. Many providers offer a free introductory hearing check, while a full diagnostic assessment may involve an out-of-pocket cost. A GP or specialist referral can attract a Medicare rebate toward the test. These are indicative market ranges only, not a quote. Contact CQ Audiology for accurate pricing for your situation.

Free hearing checks vs full diagnostic tests

It helps to know the difference between the two:

  • Free hearing check (screening): a quick check, often 15 minutes, that indicates whether you may have hearing loss. Many clinics and national providers offer this at no cost.
  • Full diagnostic assessment: a longer, detailed test (usually 30 to 60 minutes) that measures the type and degree of any hearing loss and guides treatment. This is the one that may carry a fee.

When is a hearing test free or subsidised?

Several situations reduce or remove the cost:

  • Hearing Services Program: eligible pensioners and veterans receive assessments and services at no cost.
  • GP or specialist referral: may attract a Medicare rebate toward a diagnostic test.
  • Free introductory checks: widely offered by hearing clinics as a first step.

Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances. CQ Audiology can confirm what applies to you before you book.

Is a home online hearing test the same thing?

No. Free online screeners give a useful indication in a few minutes using headphones, but they are not a diagnosis. Only a professional diagnostic test with an audiologist can confirm the type and degree of hearing loss and recommend the right next steps.

What affects the price?

The main factors are the clinic, the length and detail of the assessment, whether you have a referral, and your funding eligibility. A basic screening costs little or nothing, while a comprehensive diagnostic assessment with a written report sits at the higher end of the range.
