Hearing FAQs
How long does a hearing test take?
How long a hearing test takes, what affects the time, and how to prepare for your first appointment. General guidance from CQ Audiology, Rockhampton.
A standard adult diagnostic hearing assessment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the tests needed. Allow a little extra time for your first appointment so your audiologist can take a full history and discuss results and options with you.
What affects how long a hearing test takes (in minutes)?
- First appointment vs a review. A first visit includes a detailed history and explanation of results, so it usually runs longer than a routine follow-up test.
- Type of testing. Pure-tone testing alone is faster than a full assessment that also includes speech-in-noise testing or other specialised checks.
- Discussion time. If your results show some hearing loss, extra time is set aside to explain the audiogram and talk through options.
- Ear wax or access issues. If wax needs checking or clearing first, this can add time before the test itself begins.
A rough breakdown: case history, audiometry and results
| Stage | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Case history and otoscope check | 5 to 10 minutes |
| Pure-tone audiometry and speech testing | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Results and discussion | 10 to 20 minutes |
Actual times vary between clinics and individuals. Most testing takes place in a quiet sound booth. Your audiologist will let you know what to expect on the day.
How should you prepare for your appointment?
Avoid loud noise exposure for around 16 hours beforehand, bring a list of any medications, and let the clinic know if your ears feel blocked or if you use hearing aids already. Bringing a support person can help if you would like a second set of ears for the discussion of results.
Is a children's hearing test different?
Yes. Children's assessments often use age-appropriate, play-based methods and can take longer, since the approach is adapted to the child's age and ability to respond. Ask your clinic what to expect for a child's appointment.
