Hearing FAQs
How long do hearing aids last?
The typical lifespan of hearing aids in Australia, what affects it, and how servicing helps. CQ Audiology, Rockhampton.
Hearing aids generally last three to seven years. Behind-the-ear styles often last longer because their electronics sit outside the ear, while smaller in-canal models may need replacing sooner. Lifespan depends on care, moisture and ear wax exposure, and battery type. Regular servicing helps you get the most from them.
What affects the lifespan of hearing aids?
- Style. Behind-the-ear (BTE) and receiver-in-canal (RIC) styles keep the electronics outside the ear canal, away from wax and moisture, and often last longer than fully in-canal styles.
- Care and cleaning. Daily cleaning and proper storage significantly extend the working life of a device.
- Moisture and ear wax exposure. Sweat, humidity and wax are the most common causes of premature wear and tear.
- Battery type. Rechargeable batteries typically hold a strong charge for a few years before capacity noticeably declines, at which point the battery, not necessarily the whole device, may need replacing.
- Servicing. Regular professional servicing and maintenance catches minor issues before they become major faults, and can help keep any warranty valid.
Signs your hearing aids need replacement
There are several signs it may be time for a review or replacement. These include reduced sound quality, more frequent repairs, or a battery that no longer holds charge well. Older technology falling behind newer devices is another sign. So are hearing aids that no longer match your current hearing test results, since your hearing can change over time.
Does replacement mean starting from scratch?
Not necessarily. If you are eligible for the Hearing Services Program, replacement devices may be available through that pathway on a set replacement cycle. Your audiologist can advise on timing and options when your current devices are due for review.
How can servicing and maintenance extend hearing aid life?
Clean them daily as advised by your audiologist, store them in a dry, safe place overnight, avoid exposing them to water or excessive moisture, and attend regular servicing appointments.
