Hearing FAQs

How do you get hearing aids on the NDIS?

How the NDIS can fund hearing devices for eligible people under 65 with permanent hearing loss. CQ Audiology, Rockhampton can guide you.

The NDIS can fund hearing aids and supports for eligible participants, generally those aged 26 to 64 who are not eligible for the Hearing Services Program and whose permanent hearing loss substantially affects daily life. If you are eligible for the Hearing Services Program, that program is usually the primary funder for your basic hearing devices instead. Eligibility and funded supports are assessed individually by the NDIS. CQ Audiology can guide you on the assessment and documentation to support an application.

Who is eligible for hearing aids on the NDIS?

Generally, the NDIS funds hearing supports for participants who:

  • Are aged 26 to 64 and not eligible for the Hearing Services Program (the Hearing Services Program is the primary funder of devices for the people it covers)
  • Applied to the NDIS before turning 65 and are an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have permanent hearing loss that substantially reduces functional capacity in daily activities (a moderately severe loss, around 65 decibels or more in the better ear, is a common guide, though each case is assessed on its impact)

Eligibility for hearing supports specifically, and the extent of any funding, is determined individually as part of your NDIS plan.

What steps are involved in an NDIS application?

1. Confirm general NDIS eligibility through the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). 2. Get a hearing assessment with an audiologist to document the type and degree of your hearing loss. 3. Include hearing supports in your NDIS plan, with supporting evidence from your assessment. 4. Choose a provider, such as CQ Audiology, to supply and fit any funded devices.

What hearing aids and assistive technology might the NDIS fund?

Funded supports depend on your plan and assessed needs. They can include hearing aids and related assistive technology. They can also include supports that help you use them, such as fitting, training and maintenance. The exact supports funded depend on your individual plan.

What if you are also eligible for the Hearing Services Program?

If you are eligible for the Hearing Services Program, it is usually the primary funder for your basic hearing devices, and the NDIS funds hearing supports for eligible participants aged 26 and over who are not covered by the Hearing Services Program. You cannot claim the same support from both. CQ Audiology can help you understand which pathway is likely to apply to your situation before you start an application.

How can an audiologist help with your NDIS plan?

CQ Audiology can provide the hearing assessment and supporting documentation the NDIS process requires, discuss which pathway may suit your circumstances if you are also eligible for the Hearing Services Program, and fit and support any funded devices.
