What is micro-suction ear wax removal?
How micro-suction ear wax removal works, what to expect, and who it suits. CQ Audiology, Rockhampton.
Micro-suction is a modern, gentle method where a clinician uses a fine suction device, under magnification, to remove ear wax without flushing water into the ear. It is precise and suitable for most people, including those with a history of ear problems, and usually needs no referral. As with any ear procedure, there is a small risk of temporary discomfort or dizziness, and rarely injury.
How does it work?
Your audiologist uses a headlight or microscope for magnification. They view the ear canal directly. A fine suction tip then lifts the wax out under gentle, controlled suction. Because no water is involved, the procedure avoids the swelling and infection risk of older water-irrigation methods.
Why is it considered gentle and safe?
The clinician can see exactly what they are doing under magnification. This makes micro-suction precise and generally comfortable for most people. It does not flush water into the ear. That makes it suitable for people with a perforated eardrum, grommets, or a history of ear infections or surgery, where water-based methods would not be appropriate.
What does it feel like?
Most people describe it as a loud but painless suction sound rather than a painful sensation. Your clinician will check in with you throughout and can pause at any time if you feel uncomfortable.
Who is it suitable for?
Micro-suction suits most people with ear wax build-up, including those who cannot have water-based irrigation. It is not usually recommended if you have an active ear infection or significant ear pain. In that case, your clinician will advise seeing your GP first before wax removal proceeds.
How does it compare with older methods?
Older methods, such as ear syringing or irrigation, flush water into the ear canal to dislodge wax. This carries a higher risk of infection, discomfort or eardrum injury if not done carefully. Micro-suction avoids water altogether. That is a large part of why audiologists in Australia now widely prefer it.
Do you need a referral?
No referral is usually needed to book a micro-suction appointment, though your clinic will check your ear history and any relevant symptoms beforehand to confirm it is the right option for you.
